Records
One of the largest and most important tasks at the Carlisle Borough Police Department is the collection, organizing, and maintenance of records. These records include, but are not limited to, arrest reports, accident reports, training records, personnel information, evidence, and daily activities of the Department.
The Carlisle Borough Police currently stores these records both electronically and through the use of an extensive filing system. These records are an integral part of an officer’s job. Officers and administrators are able to access reports of past arrests and research and cross reference information, allowing the officer to investigate crimes and locate people more efficiently.
Another important records tool at the Carlisle Borough Police Department is the electronic database named METRO. METRO allows officers to be dispatched to calls for service wirelessly in patrol cars. This system also allows officers to locate personal information for investigations and complete crime reports. A "log entry" is completed in this system for all calls for service received at the Department.
Officers and administrators also have access to the Pennsylvania Justice Network (JNET). JNET was created to enhance public safety by providing a common on-line environment whereby authorized state, county, and local officials can access offender records and other criminal justice information from participating agencies. Currently JNET allows officers to locate driver license and vehicle registration information along with active and served warrants for individuals. Officers have access to this system both at the Department and in their patrol vehicles.
Evidence collecting and preservation is also an important task of the Department. Currently evidence is collected, logged, and ultimately preserved in a secure evidence room. Evidence consists of any item that was involved in the commission of a crime. Preservation and a detailed report of the location and ownership of the evidence is imperative in the prosecution of criminals.
